Background of the study
Language attitude, defined as the perceptions and beliefs held about a language, plays a pivotal role in shaping language use among communities. Among the Igbo youth, evolving attitudes toward indigenous languages have led to significant shifts in language practices (Amadi, 2023). Traditionally, the Igbo language has been a cornerstone of cultural identity and heritage; however, modern influences, globalization, and the dominance of English in formal domains have contributed to a changing linguistic landscape. Many young Igbo individuals now perceive indigenous language use as less relevant in contexts that require global communication and economic competitiveness (Okeke, 2024). These shifting attitudes can lead to reduced usage of Igbo in daily interactions, ultimately affecting language preservation efforts. While some view the decline in indigenous language use as a loss of cultural heritage, others see it as an adaptive response to modernity. This study examines the impact of language attitude on the actual use of the Igbo language among youth, exploring how positive or negative perceptions influence language retention and usage patterns in various social and academic contexts (Nwosu, 2023).
Statement of the problem
The Igbo language is experiencing a decline in daily usage among the youth, largely influenced by prevailing negative attitudes towards indigenous languages. Many Igbo youths favor English or other dominant languages due to perceptions of modernity and socio-economic advantage (Eze, 2024). This shift has resulted in reduced intergenerational language transmission and a weakening of cultural identity. The problem is exacerbated by limited institutional support for indigenous language education and the pervasive influence of global media. Consequently, there is an urgent need to understand how language attitudes contribute to the marginalization of the Igbo language and to develop strategies for its revitalization (Uzo, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
- To examine the language attitudes of Igbo youth toward their indigenous language.
- To assess the relationship between language attitude and the actual usage of Igbo among youth.
- To recommend measures for promoting a positive attitude toward the Igbo language.
Research questions:
- What are the prevailing attitudes of Igbo youth towards their indigenous language?
- How do these attitudes affect the frequency and context of Igbo language use?
- What interventions can foster a more positive perception of the Igbo language among youth?
Research hypotheses:
- Negative language attitudes among Igbo youth significantly correlate with reduced indigenous language use.
- Igbo youth with a positive perception of their language are more likely to use it in daily communication.
- Educational and cultural initiatives can improve language attitudes and increase usage.

This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of how language attitudes influence the use of indigenous languages among Igbo youth. The findings will offer valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and cultural advocates seeking to promote indigenous language preservation. By understanding the factors that shape language attitudes, the study can inform targeted interventions that encourage the sustained use of the Igbo language, thereby contributing to cultural continuity and identity reinforcement (Chukwu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of language attitude on the use of the Igbo language among Igbo youth. It focuses exclusively on language perceptions and usage patterns within this demographic.
